Diesel genset vs hybrid genset: savings in diesel fuel at a glance. Today’s military vehicle platforms are designed to function in the most complex operating environment, performing in a wide variety of mission scenarios. Reliable and efficient energy supply is a prerequisite for successfull missions, covering the entire energy cycle from generation to distribution. This exactly results in completely new requirements for highly mobile Ground-Based Air Defence (GBAD) systems: the range of vehicle platforms used here – launchers, radar stations and command posts – require absolute efficiency and reliability to attain increased endurance and survivability. VINCORION, a technology company with focus on safety-critical application areas, is an established market leader and systems integrator of scalable energy solutions for military vehicles of any kinds. More than 60 years of battle-proven experience and collaboration on established defence systems – such as PATRIOT, COBRA and IRIS-T SLM – are the ultimate foundation to address future programmes like the NNbS (Nah- und Nächstbereichsschutz) under development for the German Armed Forces. Known as the „LVS NNbS“, this system is intended to provide the Bundeswehr with a robust capability, protecting manoeuvring ground troops and stationary assets against the spectrum of aerial threats (e.g., drones). NNbS seeks to fill an existing capability gap and aims to deliver an indigenous and low-risk solution for the German demand. The system will be based on commercially available systems and components, including reliable, efficient and flexible systems for on-board electrical power generation. What makes NNbS a challenging project is that it requires maximum power for only a fraction of the operating time. Compared to previous GBAD architectures where there are diesel gensets in use, VINCORION’s solution on offer for NNbS calls for hybrid power supply with the capability to store electric energy when it is needed, thus saving huge quantities of diesel fuel. As fossil fuel costs and pollution concerns continue to rise worldwide, interest in more fuel efficient, lower polluting power supply systems – like hybrid gensets – will continue to grow in the highly dynamic land warfare arena. As a robust and compact combination of diesel engine, alternator and rectifier, these gensets are designed to overcome ineffective idle times with high fuel consumption, as well as heigthened signatures (e.g., temperature and noise). What makes NNbS and its various vehicle platforms – radars, launchers, Tactical Operation Centres (TOCs) – so challenging is the limited installation space that requires significant knowledge how tailor-made, high-energy density can be integrated into the limited installation space of vehicle platforms. VINCORION’s hybrid gensets fit into this complexity, providing the vehicle platforms with electric energy tailored to the individual demand. VINCORION’s solutions on offer for the German NNbS system are testament of a transformation process affecting the entire Armed Forces – the need for hybrid energy supply solutions is constantly growing in the military. Hybrid gensets are addressing key user requirements: reliability; modularity (with hardware components easily expanded or upgraded on demand); compactness (coping with limited space); low life-cycle costs; easy vehicle integration/exchange; and open interfaces for all types of vehicles. VINCORION contributes its own proven philosophy when developing tailor-based power supply solutions, underlining that military vehicle platforms on the modern battlefield require high-reliable, economical use of fuel, and the ability to operate independently if electric energy is not available from other sources. Addressing new markets and demands, VINCORION brings in superior expertise to precisely integrate highly sophisticated power supply solutions into vehicle platforms of limited size. The customized power supply systems on offer for the NNbS programme provides evidence that electric energy is the enabling factor for its integration into a highly dynamic, fully networked environment.
