Hensoldt Details Xpeller Counter-UAV

A modular and scalable solution to protect sensitive areas

Hensoldt displayed elements of its Xpeller Counter-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) system at the Electronic Warfare (EW) Europe event in London on 7 June 2017.

Speaking to MONS at the event, company officials explained how this latest concept added a personnel protection element to the wider Xpeller concept, initially devised as a modular and scalable solution to protect, “sensitive areas against illicit intrusions of small drones, ranging from individual buildings through to airports and military camps.

Hensoldt explained how Xpeller comprises radars, optical and other sensor payloads capable of detecting and identifying UAVs as well as threat assessment at ranges stretching from a, “few hundred metres out to several kilometres.”

“Once the threat has been identified, a jammer interrupts the link between drone and pilot and/or its navigation,” company literature explained. Specifically, elements include the SPEXER 500 X-band radar; Z: NightOwl ZM-ER thermal camera, and UAV Jammer operating between 20Mhz and 6,000MHz. The jammer is available in directional and omnidirectional configurations.

Xpeller is capable of detecting UAVs at a range of 4km while confirming identification and conducting an interception mission through the jammer technology at a range of 1.5 kilometres. Radar payloads comprise a 120-degree azimuth with 30-degree elevation, operating from a 4W RF power output.

Hensoldt’s decision to provide a dismounted protective capability to armed forces follows increasing demand from across the community, including the US Special Operations Command, for such technology in response to emerging threats associated with the contemporary operating environment.

Combatant groups including the self-proclaimed Islamic State continue to upgrade commercial off the shelf UAVs by arming them with dirty bombs, multiple types of which have already been witnessed across the battlefields of northern Iraq and Syria, industry sources confirmed to MONS.
