US Coast Guard to Receive SEA GIRAFFEs

Saab Will Deliver Additional Radars in 2019

The US Navy (USN) has contracted Saab to provide additional SEA GIRAFFE AMB Multi Mode Radars (MMR) for the US Coast Guard’s (USCG) newest class of vessel, the Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC). Delivery of these additional radars is expected to be completed in 2019.

The MMR system is a three dimensional, electronically scanned phased array radar providing high-radiated power, selectable waveforms and modern signal processing to consistently deliver the highest performance across various maritime environments and missions. Saab received the initial order for the MMR for the OPC from the USN in 2017.

“Variants of the SEA GIRAFFE AMB are currently included in four separate US military and homeland security programmes. We are pleased that the US Navy and Coast Guard continue to trust Saab to deliver world-leading sensor performance and total situational awareness, even in the most challenging maritime environments,” commented Senior Vice President and head of Saab’s surveillance business area, Anders Carp.

In addition to the MMR equipping the OPC, Saab’s SEA GIRAFFE AMB radar, which has the US designation AN/SPS-77, is currently deployed on the USN’s INDEPENDENCE-class Littoral Combat Ship. A derivative of AN/SPS-77, known as AN/SPN-50, is also being developed to meet shipboard air traffic control requirements for USN Naval Air Systems Command.

The SEA GIRAFFE AMB is a medium range, multi-role surveillance radar optimised for detecting small air and surface targets with high update rate in all kinds of environments, including the littorals. It will assist the commander in all kind of naval warfare and give the operators maximum time to react to incoming threats. The SEA GIRAFFE AMB is optimised for, and is in service on, vessels such as the Swedish VISBY-class corvette, Republic of Singapore Navy’s upgraded VICTORY-class corvette and the US Littoral Combat Ship INDEPENDENCE class, and has the designation AN/SPS 77 V(1) for LCS 2 and 4, and AN/SPS 77 V(2) for LCS 6 and higher. The radar has an instrumented range of 180 kilometres-

Saab’s SEA GIRAFFE AMB is the naval variant of their GIRAFFE radar with 3D AMB technology (coverage at 5.4-5.9 GHz). It can detect air and surface targets from the horizon up to a height of 20,000m metres (66,000ft) at elevations up to 70 degrees, and can simultaneously handle multiple threats approaching from different directions and altitudes, including diving anti-ship missiles. Also, it is specialised for rapidly detecting small, fast moving targets at all altitudes and small surface targets in severe clutter.
