First 13 Aircraft Delivered From 2024
On 3 March the US Air Force authorised low-rate initial production (LRIP) of the MH-139 Grey Wolf helicopter, intended to replace the venerable UH-1N Huey in the protection of ICBM sites across the United States.
Subsequently, airframers Boeing and Leonardo announced receipt of a contract for the first 13 aircraft, with delivery to commence next year. The industrial team was awarded a $2.4 billion contract in September 2018 for up to 84 helicopters, training systems and associated support equipment. The first four helicopters, which the USAF accepted in August last year, are now being used for additional developmental and initial operational testing.
The MH-139 is based on Leonardo’s proven AW139 design, of which over 1,130 are currently in service worldwide. “This decision is a major step toward entering the MH-139 into service and providing the US Air Force with additional missile security for decades,” said Azeem Khan, Boeing’s MH-139 Program Director. “We are working diligently to begin deliveries next year.”
The strength of the MH-139A lies in the collaborative efforts of Leonardo as original equipment manufacturer, and Boeing, as prime contractor responsible for militarisation and post-delivery support. By offering a proven aircraft and integrating Boeing’s advanced technology, the US Air Force is assured a helicopter with enhanced capabilities, allowing it to accomplish missions more quickly, quietly, and efficiently.
