US State Department Approves Japan F-35 Procurement

105 Aircraft at $23.11 Billion

The US State Department has approved the potential Foreign Military Sale for 105 F-35 aircraft to Japan at an estimated cost of $23.11 billion (€20.3 billion), according to a 9 July notification to Congress by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency.

The government of Japan has requested 63 F-35A, 42 F-35B and 110 Pratt and Whitney F135 engines, including five spares. Also included are EW, C4I and logistics support system, including the Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS) and F-35 performance-based logistics; training systems; F-35 unique infrared flares; software development/integration; flight test instrumentation; aircraft ferry and tanker support; spare and repair parts; support equipment, tools and test equipment; technical data and publications; personnel training and training equipment.

The prime contractors will be Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, Fort Worth, TX; and Pratt and Whitney Military Engines, East Hartford, CT.  There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.
