Rheinmetall presents Full Motion Simulator
MONS visited Rheinmetall stand to talk with Lutz Wahlers, Senior Software Development Manager for Maritime Simulation at Rheinmetall Defence, about their Full Motion Simulator. “This is a replica of a submarine control cabine that simulates all the controls and the movements of a submarine pitch down and roll,” says Wahlers.
The simulator is a multifunction console that can be adapted to simulate the controls of a variety of submarine models. “The buttons on the sides of each part of the console make it easy to remove and replace according to the type of submarine one wishes to train for,” continues Wahlers, “and currently we can provide parts for all the submarines built by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) with whom we have a very good cooperation.”
The console is also complete with a touch screen that is used to change the submarine type and automatically load the exercise that goes with it. It works by changing the mathematical model for the steering station reproducing the real sensations felt in the submarine model. “The software for the simulation allows us to stop and exercise half way through and start it again the next day at exactly the same point of the simulation,” concludes Wahlers.
