PDM Refresh Addresses Obsolescence, Connectivity, Data Security
Ultra Sonar Systems has successfully completed a programme to update the Platform Data Management (PDM) system on board the Royal Navy’s Type 23 Frigates. The PDM system takes data from navigation systems and sensors and distributes it to various systems on board.
The upgrade means that the PDM will continue to provide data distribution as part of the RN’s LIFEX (life extension) programme, and Ultra says the technology “can readily apply” to other naval platforms or data-distribution systems, be they within the RN or for export customers. LIFEX involves hull repairs, installation of the SEA CEPTOR missile to replace the SEA WOLF, and fitting ARTISAN radars to those vessels in the 13-strong fleet that had not already received them, among other refreshes and upgrades.
“Ultra continues to deliver the very best solutions to the Royal Navy,” Bernard Mills, President of Ultra Sonar Systems, said. “This new system update will use modern technology and techniques to improve performance, reliability and resilience; address obsolescence; and ease installation and maintenance.”
