Ukrainian Radar Commences Testing

Testing Commences of 80K6T Radar

Ukroboronprom has commenced testing of Iskra’s 80K6T ground-based air surveillance radar. This new radar has been in development for a number of years and is expected to furnish the Ukrainian Armed Forces with a new ground-based air surveillance system over the coming five years.

It is expected, according to MONS sources, that the radar will be procured to replace several disparate Russian and Soviet Union-era systems currently in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but which are suffering increasing reliability shortcomings due to embargos on spare parts and maintenance provision following Russia’s involvement in the Ukrainian Civil War since 2014.

Details of the radar’s performance are sparse, although the firm has stated that it has an instrumented range of up to 216 nautical miles (400 kilometres) with the ability to track up to 500 targets. Although not confirmed by the company, it is possible that this radar transmits in either S-band (2.3 gigahertz/GHz to 2.5GHz/2.7GHz to 3.7 gigahertz) or L-band (1.215GHz to 1.4GHz). As well as providing general air surveillance, Ukroboronprom announced that the radar will provide target detection for Ukrainian surface-to-air missile batteries. There is no word on how many of the new systems the Ukrainian Armed Forces may acquire.
