UK MoD Launches New SME Action Plan

Easier, Faster Access to New Technologies

The UK MoD has launched a new ‘Defence Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Action Plan,’ to ensure easier and faster access to new and cutting-edge military technology.

Jeremy Quin, Minister for Defence Procurement, made the announcement during a visit to the Berkshire research facility run by simulation and training specialists 4GD. The company, founded by veterans of the Royal Marines and the UK’s airborne forces, seeks to combine virtual technologies with real-world training. Its SmartFacility, which is in service with the British Army’s 16 Air Assault Brigade, is available in five levels, and is configurable to the requirements of individual customers.

SMEs deliver vital skills to defence, helping keep our armed forces safe and improve our battle-winning capabilities,” Quin said. “Our new SME Action Plan will increase engagement with the SME sector, and reduce barriers to better utilise the expertise and innovation these organisations offer.”

Also present for the announcement were representatives of the companies D3A Defence Ltd. and 2iC. The latter provides information-sharing software and was involved in developing the Plan. The former is another veteran-owned business which provides subject-matter expertise for military training.

Under the plan, the MoD will introduce a number of measures to enable smaller companies to bid for more work and to streamline and speed up procurement processes. “This includes policies for opening supply chains further, supporting acquisition teams with early market engagement and raising commercial assurance processes,” stated 4GD. “It also includes policies that set social value criteria and environmental standards“.

Rob Taylor, company founder, added “The government continues to demonstrate its commitment to innovation in defence and is building a collaborative environment to enable specialist SMEs like 4GD to thrive.”
