UK calls on industry and academia to join €1.1 billion drive to bolster UK hypersonics capability

Applications are open until 12 January

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is calling on industry and academia to apply to participate in the €1.1 (£1) billion seven years framework programme to develop advanced hypersonic missile capabilities, a goal announced by the UK MOD earlier this year.

The Hypersonic Technologies & Capability Development Framework (HTCDF) is being implemented after the UK Government decided to accelerate the development of a sovereign UK Hypersonic Strike Capability, provide a route to market for future operational elements of hypersonic and adjacent technologies whilst bolstering AUKUS collaboration with Australia and the United States.

MOD intends to encourage established corporations, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and academia to join the framework. The organisations accepted onto the framework, governed by Team Hypersonics (UK), will be eligible to apply for contracts across eight lots. Team Hypersonics (UK) wants to enable a collaborative enterprise approach to development which leverages the strength and breadth of UK talent and innovation across the various actors.

Services and supplies needed are likely to include research, systems, components, technology, infrastructure, testing and components, including airframes, flight control computer systems, guidance systems, data links systems, evaluation, platform integration, academic research, system design authority, modelling and simulation, thermal management, mission planning and assurance.

There will be neither minimum or maximum suppliers per lot, nor on the framework. Defence Equipment and Support, the procurement arm of the UK MOD, will manage the latter,

Paul Wilson, Programme Director of Team Hypersonics (UK), said: “This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an iconic national endeavour. We are keen for Industry and Academia to apply to join the commercial framework and a build a broad defence enterprise. In this way, we will drive the development of new capabilities, to harness advanced technologies, and build greater competitive edge for the UK Armed Forces and our Allies.”

To participate, interested suppliers must register on the Defence Sourcing Portal and submit a Pre-Qualification Questionnaire response by 12 January 2024. Details of the opportunity and procurement process can be found on the Find a Tender Service here: Hypersonic Technologies & Capability Development Framework – Find a Tender (find-tender.service.gov.uk)
