Singapore Airshow: TRML-4D close to completion

Hensoldt moves forward on fielding new ground-based air surveillance radar.

Hensoldt’s new TRML-4D C-band (5.25 gigahertz/GHz to 5.925GHz) ground-based air surveillance radar is expected to be delivered to its first customer by 2020, company sources told MONS during the Singapore Air Show. The TRML-4D is a land-based version of the firm’s TRS-4D naval surveillance radar which equips the US Navy’s ‘Freedom’ class littoral combat ship. Although the firm stated that some testing of this new radar is still required it added that the development of the TRML-4D in a land-based configuration has been relatively straightforward given the work that the company has already performed on the naval variant. The TRML-4D is the latest development of the legacy C-band TRML-3D ground-based air surveillance radar, with the major difference being the former’s active electronically scanned array antenna, compared to the passive electronically scanned array of the latter. Hensoldt added that it has secured a customer for the TRML-4D which will take delivery of “multiple examples” of the radar from 2020, although declining to name the client, only stating that it is a “non North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)” customer.
