Streamlight TLR-6

MONS Gear Box Product Review

Running Streamlight‘s TLR-6 on a Glock G43 for two months now, the weapon light currently performs as advertised, being a combination white light and red laser unit that also mounts on a Glock 42’s trigger guard. When installed, the weapon light maintains the overall look and smooth flow of the pistol, so no loss there. Installation was easy with three screws as the unit comes with a small tool

According to the company, the light (LED) is rated at 100 lumens with a 2,000 candela peak beam intensity that is run by a pair of CR1/3N batteries for 60 minutes. At 5.59cm (2.2in), 33g (1.2oz), the unit’s 640–660nm red laser is very bright to the point that it is even usable in direct summer sunlight. The company states the laser alone has a runtime of 11 hours. Critics say that shooters rely on red lights instead of the sights and their proficiency declines as a result. Well, for someone like me with poor vision, I can see the red dot even when not being able to see the sights without my glasses.

Two large ambidextrous buttons (easily reachable on the G43) on each side of the housing are easily pressed, and are obvious to the touch, making available various modes: laser only, light only or light and laser.

The TLR-6 shuts off automatically after 10 minutes, which surprised me at first as the stated runtime for this light is one hour and I thought, “10 minutes? That’s it?” This weapon light is not a flashlight and therefore not intended for such purposes. The LED ran warm to the touch, being a cool running light compared to other weaponlights I tested, which ran hot.

Dropping the unit onto hard concrete from a distance of 1m (as advised), the unit survived, still works and has very little cosmetic damage. The TLR-6 is IPX4 rated, i.e. splash resistant, not waterproof, which for obvious reasons I did not test at the range, but is great when shooting in the rain.

I really have to say, Streamlight did a very good job with the size envelope developing a very compact and rugged weapon light and laser, even though I would have liked more lumens…but then that is just me. The light it gives is more than enough to properly identify a target in low light conditions.

The TLR-6 continues to work reliably even after multiple trips to the range with hundreds of rounds fired providing to be a good aiming tool. I very much recommend this unit for anyone in need for a light, compact and rugged weapon light with a laser.

As I am still awaiting for approval from the range to post photos I shot and will be posted soon.
