Saab and Damen announce partnership for the TAMANDARE-Class Corvette

Saab and Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding have come together to compete for the project that will supply four TAMANDARE-Class Corvettes (CCT) for the Brazilian Navy.

Saab will provide, in case the partners’ proposal is chosen by the Brazilian Navy, the complete combat system including the Saab 9LV Combat Management System (CMS), a modern and proven open architecture, known for its flexibility and easy integration of third-party modules as well as high performance mission equipment. 9LV is based on experience from more than 300 successfully delivered systems, used by navies from several countries.

Damen will be responsible for supplying the SIGMA 10514, a Dutch-built family of modular naval vessels, of either corvette or frigate size, an off-the-shelf product that will be adapted according to the requirements of the client. This design was earlier selected by Indonesia and Mexico.

This project is proposing a large technology transfer programme, in addition to partnerships with local companies, benefiting the Brazilian defence industry. The companies are ready to prove to the Brazilian Navy that they are reliable as long-term partners, because this is part of the business culture of these companies.

Saab is looking forward to the cooperation with Damen and the local partners for the CCT programme. We believe our proposal meets the requirements of the Brazilian Navy and offers the added value of industrial cooperation and transfer of technology that are intrinsic to Saab’s way of doing business,” says Marianna Silva, Head of Saab do Brasil.

We at Damen appreciate the increasingly important task of the Brazilian Navy to safeguard the maritime domain against its existent and future threats and challenges. We are looking forward to participate in a constructive way in this process,” Richard Keulen, Director Naval Sales of Damen, concludes. “We also are confident that our product will integrate perfectly with those of Saab.

Saab, Damen, and partners will be at RIDEX (Rio International Defence Exhibition), in Rio de Janeiro, 27-29 June, at Pier Mauá, in a shared stand located on D24 area.

In December 2017, the Brazilian Navy issued request for proposals (RFP) for the construction of new corvettes. The RFP was announced at the Brazilian Naval Academy by Defence Minister Raul Jungmann and Brazilian Navy Chief Admiral Eduardo Bacellar Leal Ferreira. Brazil is planning to invest U$1.6 billion to acquire four corvettes in the class. The country is looking to receive the first unit in the class by 2021-22.

The vessels are to be built in Brazil, or with great involvement of the Brazilian industry, in collaboration with a foreign shipbuilder. According to the Brazilian Navy’s Ships Projects Center (CPN), the corvettes should be measuring 103m in length and displacing up to 2,790 tonnes.

When it comes to armament, it is known that the ships will be equipped with MBDA’s SeaCeptor missiles, which was selected by Brazil in 2014.
