New Advanced HMD Will be Manufactured in Brazil
The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has ordered an unspecified number of TARGO advanced helmet mounted displays (HMD) from Saab for approx. SEK119 million (US$13 million). Intended for use with the Air Force’s GRIPEN E/F aircraft, deliveries are scheduled for 2022-2026.
The HMD, which have also been ordered by the Brazilian Air Force for its GRIPEN NG fleet, will be manufactured by AEL Sistemas in Brazil. A partner in the technology transfer programme that forms part of the F-X2 fighter programme, AEL will also supply the wide area display and head-up display for the Brazilian GRIPENs.
TARGO will bring night cueing and display capabilities to Swedish Air Force pilots, who already use HMD on the existing fleet. Pilots equipped with TARGO will be able to better locate, track, identify and engage air and ground targets, as the system provides situational awareness and easier engagement options. A helmet mounted visor displays flight information such as altitude and air speed, as well as cueing targets and supplying supporting tracking data to the pilot.
