Survivability on Wheels

Update on JLTV programme in the US and the UK

At DSEI 2017, Oshkosh Defense is showcasing its Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), a highly manoeuvrable vehicle that is currently undergoing reliability and durability tests with the US Army. George Mansfield, Oshkosh Defence Vice President and General Manager for International Programmes, told MONS: “We are currently at low rate production, that is seven per day, and expect to be at full rate production by the first quarter of 2019.

The US Army has already ordered 2,700 vehicles out of the 17,000 it has an option to acquire, with the last batch of orders made last August. The programme has also been successful with the UK, which will purchase 2747 JLTVs for an estimated cost of $1.04billion. On this programme Mr Mansfield commented: “The Foreign Military Sales has recently been approved and we expect the process to finish in the coming weeks, perhaps month, to allow for an estimated start of delivery in the spring of 2019.

Talking about survivability, Mr Mansfield indicated that certain details are confidential and cannot be disclosed, however the JLTV can be purchased with the option of the B-Kit, which includes additional armour protection. The JLTV can also be protected from rocket-propelled grenades thanks to a net mounted around the vehicle. Without the B-kit, the vehicle weighs 14,000t, going up to 18,000t with the B-kit and 24,000t with the full crew on board.
