South Korea Testing Escribano RWS on Hyundai Rotem UGVs

Naval Variant Also Developed

Some stories have a habit of growing. When Gabriel Dominguez reported last week on the South Korean Army’s induction of its first UGVs, MON was unaware of an impending announcement today by Escribano Mechanical & Engineering – that its remote weapon station (RWS) has been integrated and is being tested on the Hyundai Rotem MPUGVs in question.

Escribano has been selected to equip the first three Hyundai Rotem 6×6 UGV demonstrators with its GUARDIAN-APSIS RWS, which the South Korean Army is now testing in real operational conditions, in which it is already showing its reliability, according to a 17 January announcement from the Madrid-based company.

GUARDIAN-ASPIS is claimed to be the lightest remote weapon station on the market. At less than 90kg, this 2-axis gyro-stabilised system is capable of both day and night operations, thanks to its advanced electro optical sensors. Featuring advanced fire control and aiming systems, the modular design allows a wide range of 5.56mm and 7.62m weapons to be mounted. Specifically designed for integration on a wide range of platforms, GUARDIAN-APSIS is a highly cost-effective solution for defence against asymmetric threats and UAVs.

Escribano’s expertise in integrating RWS covers a significant spectrum of platforms and applications – from the Milrem Robotics THeMIS UGV, to the Rheinmetall Mision Master 8×8 vehicle and the MUTT UGV developed General Dynamics European Land Systems-Santa Bárbara Sistemas. The company has also developed a naval variant, the SENTINEL-ASPIS: transforming the same philosophy to a maritime environment, the system has already been installed on USVs, allowing multirole missions at sea or in the uncertain environment of littoral waters.
