Rheinmetall hopes to bring Oerlikon SEARANGER to the US

At Surface Navy 2018, MONS sat down with Andrew A. Bradick, Andrew A. Bradick & Associates, LLC, Defence and Naval Advisor to Rheinmetall AG, to talk about the OerlikonSEARANGER 20mm remote controlled gun station. The Oerlikon Searanger is a high precision, stabilised 20mm gun station with integrated, independent electro-optical fire control system.

Mr. Bradick indicated that it has been in production in Switzerland for about a year and that there might be prospects with the US: “We are currently in discussion with a customer here in the US, and we are hoping that the contract will signed before summer in order to begin production shortly after that.”

The identity of the customer remains undisclosed for confidentiality reasons, but the production line would be set-up in Maine where Rheinmetall is already producing other weapons.

The OerlikonSEARANGER distinguishes itself with its distributed lethality and its small footprint, which makes an ideal gun for the defence of light patrol and combat boats, including military sealift command ships. It can also be a suitable complement to current automated weapon systems on larger vessels for close range defence.

Once the production line has been set-up in the US and this becomes a US product, we are hoping that the US Navy shows interested in perhaps acquiring the Oerlikon Searanger,” concluded Mr. Bradick.
