Smiths Detection $90 Million DoD Contract for JCAD Adapter

Expands Capability of Handheld Detector

Smiths Detection is to initiate production of the Solid Liquid Adapter (SLA) for the Joint Chemical Agent Detector (JCAD), following an IDIQ contract award from DoD valued at up to $90.8 million (€77.7 million) over a nine-year period, the company announced on 22 October.

Fitting an SLA to the JCAD provides the operator with the ability to test for illicit drugs, including opioids such as fentanyl, and to detect explosive compounds – without compromising the conventional chemical warfare agent detection capability of the JCAD, which is one of the most extensive chemical warfare programmes in DoD history.

The SLA leverages existing technology, extending both capabilities and the life-cycle of widely deployed detection devices. It is an example of how Smiths Detection applies innovative technology and digital applications to help customers maximise the investments they make today, while preparing for the future,” commented the company’s President, Shan Hood.

The JCAD is based on SDI’s Lightweight Chemical Detector (LCD) product line of advanced, easy-to-use, lightweight and man-portable threat detection devices. The LCD is a cost-effective and reliable solution that protects military personnel, police and HazMat responders, by alerting operators to toxic substances and dangerous chemicals detected.
