Spyderco SLIVERAX

MONCh Gear Box Product Review

As you all might know, MONCh Gear Box is a huge fan of Spyderco, and we have several in our active rotation. Spyderco is one of those family-owned companies (run by Sal, Gail and Eric Glesser) that really stands out. They test EVERY knife coming out of the company’s incredible factory in Golden, CO and treat their employees there exceptionally!

But that is not all, the company is involved with the community through local charities and have a monthly lottery of knives they send to deployed servicemen and women. Mr Glesser first started producing knife sharpeners in 1978, selling knife sharpeners from the back of a converted bread truck at state fairs (the family also lived in the truck),  and moved onto folding knives in 1981. Spyderco has a rich history in folding knives and continues to be one of the most popular brands today in both knives and sharpeners, being fully committed to making reliable high-performance cutting tools that people can trust with their lives.

Now onto the knife at hand: The SLIVERAX, a slim profile EDC knife designed by Paul Alexander, has many of the things I look for in a cutting tool: the blade shape and grind, the finger guard formed by the choil and the flipper tab, the texture of the handle scales and the light weight (open length of 8in/203mm at 3.3oz/94 grams). It features a 3.48in/88mm drop point blade made of CPM S30V stainless steel, is .142in/3.6mm thick with a satin finish, a full flat grind, and of course the SpyderHole (aka Round Hole) and a flipper for ambidextrous one hand opening.

The flipper and Round Hole allow the knife to be quickly deployed with a full range of one-handed opening techniques that both work equally well with either hand. The seamless flow of the blade and handle creates a slightly negative blade angle, which enhances cutting leverage and places the point on the knife’s centerline for maximum utility and control. This also shortens the blade’s opening arc to further increase the speed and reliability of one-handed openings. Once open, the blade’s flipper acts a finger guard to provide additional grip security when in use.

The black carbon fibre and G10 laminate handle, 4.64in/118mm closed, has ergonomic contours with a pronounced finger groove, nested stainless steel liners, a lined lanyard hole, and a side to side reversible deep-pocket wire clip mounted at the butt end. I love this feature, as it blends with the material it is attached to and positions the knife low for secure, extremely discreet carry, yet still keep it poised for a rapid draw, if worn in pants-pocket.

Spyderco’s patented Compression Lock mechanism is a high-strength lock located in the spine of the handle to greatly reduce the risk of unintentional release during use.

Even though this is a very good looking knife, the slim handle and the size of the knife are too small for my big hands. Also when dropped on several occasions, the flipper opened, which is dangerous, especially in the dark.

It is still a very solid knife from an incredible company that just HAS to be supported.

Even though the blade is nice and large, the handle is a wee bit too small for my large paws. Still, this is a solid knife that is worth it!
