SIG Sauer Fits out Police Departments

Bismarck & El Monte PDs Adopt SIG Sauer

SIG Sauer was recently selected to supply the Bismarck Police Department (PD) with 140 P320 striker-fired pistols equipped with X-RAY3 pistol sights and the El Monte PD with a full package (pistols, rifles, suppressors and electro-optics).

Bismarck Police Chief Dan Donlin explained that is PD, “needs to replace our handguns due to some documented malfunctions and reliability concerns over the last couple of years,” having conducted extensive testing of firearms from three manufacturers (the P320, the Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 and the Glock 17 & 19). According to Chief Donlin, the decision, “was quickly narrowed down to the SIG SAUER P320 based on performance and reliability.”

The P320 provided a lot more overall comfort and handling in the varying hand sizes of our officers,” Donlin said, noting the modularity of the handgun, with its three sizes of grip module to choose from. “The SIG, out of the box, was very accurate. Even our best shooters couldn’t believe how much better they shot with it.”

SIG SAUER is very proud to have been chosen by the Bismarck Police Department,” Tom Jankiewicz, Executive Vice President, Law Enforcement Sales, said. “The P320 was chosen because of its modularity, accuracy and most importantly its reliability. These officers put their lives on the line, and we’re humbled to have our products chosen to help keep them safe.”

Founded in 1912, the El Monte PD’s 123 sworn officers serve an area 12mi east of downtown Los Angeles, CA/USA. Initiated through the department’s SWAT (Special Weapons And Tactics) division, SWAT Team Leader Sgt. Mark Snook began the acquisition process with handguns in both 9mm and 45 auto from SIG Sauer, HK, Glock and FN, as well as a rifle and suppressor package in 5.56 NATO. SIG Sauer submitted the latest version of the SIG MCX rifle equipped with an SRD556 suppressor. The SRD556 is an Inconel 718 (a nickel alloy stainless steel, providiing a high level of durability, particularly with short-barreled hosts using supersonic ammunition) direct thread suppressor.

The overwhelming decision was the SIG 226 and 229 in 9mm and the 220 in 45 auto,” said Sgt. Snook. “I, along with the rest of the SWAT team, pushed for the Legion models as they are the top of the line SIG models, and they already include all of the upgraded features we were looking for.”

Upon seeing the SWAT acquisition, El Monte Police Chief David Reynoso determined the new firearms were the best option for their officers, and expanded the acquisition to supply the entire department with the new handguns.

The SWAT team also selected the SIG Sauer rifle and suppressor package for duty use. The rifles submitted for evaluation included SIG Sauer Electro-Optics ROMEO4T red dot sights and JULIET4 magnifiers. Although the department was not looking to acquire new optics, the officers involved in the evaluation process determined the electro-optics products were superior to their older red dot sights, and have begun the process to add them to the acquisition.

All in all, 17 MCX rifles (select fire, 11.5in Barrels, 5.56mm) with SRD556 direct thread suppressors, ROMEO4T red dot optics (for short and medium range engagements and recreational shooting across a wide range of calibres and light conditions; fully ruggedized and impact resistant for the toughest environments; ultra durable and lightweight 7075 aluminium main housing and components, 1.41in riser mount with additional lower 1/3 co-witness spacer) and JULIET4  4x optic magnifiers (designed to work as a stand-alone magnification solution or in conjunction with reflex optics, it has a PowerCam 90° Mount so it can be quickly flipped to the side for more immediate, close quarters scenarios or deployed rapidly to bring targets four times closer) were aquired.

We have a long history of providing the best quality firearms for law enforcement use, it’s exciting to be able to create a solution tailored to meet the mission of any department,” Mr. Jankiewicz concluded. “We are humbled that officers trust their lives to our products.”
