Singapore Airshow: Finders keepers

Elbit promotes Airkeeper at Singapore Air Show

Elbit Systems has shared details with MONS regarding the performance of the company’s Airseeker combined Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) and Electronic Attack (EA) system designed to equip airborne platforms. Company officials disclosed to MONS that the aircraft has both Communications Intelligence (COMINT) and Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) collection capabilities and EA functions, with both these missions capable of being performed simultaneously. In terms of the EA mission Elbit officials continued that both narrow and wideband jamming can be performed against ground-based radar and communications system targets. In terms of the Airseeker’s frequency range it covers a waveband of circa three megahertz (MHz) to the millimetre wave range upwards of Ku-band (13.4 gigahertz/GHz to 14GHz/15.7GHz to 17.7GHz), with the EA jamming functions provided by “accurate, directional spot jamming using advanced algorithms,Elbit officials continued, adding that the aircraft’s COMINT gathering function can encompass frequency-hopping tactical communications as well as conventional communications techniques.

Although Elbit demurred from providing customer details regarding the Airseeker system, they did disclose that it furnishes an Airbus C-295 turboprop freighter as a palletised system which can be removed from the aircraft enabling it to function as a conventional freighter. Open source reports have speculated that the Airkeeper could equip a C-295M operated by the Mexican Air Force. In terms of communications, the Airseeker can share its intelligence with other users across wideband SATCOM (Satellite Communications) and conventional very/ultra high frequency tactical datalinks. In terms of concepts of operations Elbit noted that the aircraft can be used for operational and tactical level SIGINT and EA, and also perform stand-off jamming over an undisclosed range to support suppression/destruction of enemy air defence missions.
