In Service in Spain and Saudi Arabia
At SICUR 2018 at the Feria de Madrid Spanish company Sistems de Protección Pasiva (SPP – Passive Protection Systems) highlighted the two products it has developed for protecting the fuel tanks of military vehicles.
PYROTECT is a self-sealing coating that prevents fuel loss and the risk of fire if a tank is shot through. EXPLOSTOP, which consists of balls of a metallic alloy that are poured into the tank, prevent it from exploding or catching fire, even if the tanks are struck by armour piercing incendiary (API) ammunition. EXPLOSTOP does not increase the weight or volume of the vehicle and can be applied to aluminium, steel or armoured steel tanks for gasoline or diesel fuels.
In tests in 2017 at the La Marañosa campus of INTA (the Spanish National Institute of Aerospace Technology), the two products proved themselves compatible with NATO STANAG 4241 Ed 2 and with INTA’s own testing protocols. The technologies have already been applied to the VAMTAC high mobility tactical vehicles supplied to the Spanish Ministry of Defence by UROVESA since 2013 and are also in service on board vessels of the Royal Saudi Arabian Navy.
