Helikon-Tex Covert Tactical Pants (CTP)

MONCh Gear Box Product Review

If you are anything like us here at MONCh Gear Box, you’re pretty rough on your tactical gear. Everything we test needs to be durable and rugged; plus in clothing, it needs to offer the ability to move comfortably, still giving the wearer the ability to take action as quickly and effectively as possible.

Finding a pair of pants that will check all the boxes is quite a feat. Tactical pants need to offer ruggedness with numerous features for better functionality. Now, while a lot of tactical pants look like cargo pants, they are everything but, offering an abundance of extra features. That said, when it comes to covertness, tactical pants will always make you stand out. There are some differences, case in point.

The Helikon-Tex Covert Tactical Pants (CTP) are part of the Urban Line group of products offered by the company, headquartered in Poland.

CTP are a wolf in sheep’s clothing, i.e., designed to make you look like the average Joe, but with a hefty punch. Paired with a nice blazer one would even be welcome at the golf club, nevertheless a desert military base.

The flat front design means they look super professional, and for an everyday pant these are hard to beat.

Made of 93% nylon and 7% spandex, the lightweight CTP offer a DuPont Teflon coating and four-way expandable elastic fabric, providing both durability (CTP offers enhanced stitching for increased durability) and extreme comfort. Helikon-Tex calls this VERSASTRETCH.

Here comes my first con, though: Due to the material, CTP are not very breathable in hot climates. When taking them off, it feels like you’re coming out of a sauna. I wore them in Jordan and they were definitely too warm. In colder climates they are amazing though, not too hot, but warm enough.

When it comes to storing your items, these pants give you many options with its six external pockets (two front, two sides, two rear), designed specifically for this model of pants, to carry EDC items comfortably. The front pockets have strengthened edges that allow for attachment of any gear with clips, be it a torch or a multitool/knife. You can stay assured that your pocket edges won’t suddenly tear.

Four pockets are sewn inside that can hold gear; two smaller in the front and two magazine sized pockets on each side, which may also improvise as inside-the-waistband (IWB) holster for concealed carry of pistols.

These concealed pockets unfortunately are not flapped so they are not perfect for keeping valuable items, still up to now I did not loose any items I kept there, be it coins, keys or a credit card-wallet. They seem to be kept closed securely enough by your waist or a belt.

Large back pockets.

The 50mm wide belt loops are fitted for a wide and sturdy gun belt, capable of adequately supporting holster...being a bit too wide giving it a more tactical look if one is to bend over or be in a situation where one's belt line can be seen.

As these are nylon/spandex, the contures of what one is wearing can be seen and makes CTP more of a rock climbing pant, again adding to covertness.

The elastic waist with a Velcro fastener is great to adjust the waist size even without a belt. Putting load in the pockets does not make the pants get any loose or slide down. The fastener locks the trousers on one's waist very securely and comfortably. The fly is YKK zippered.

Thanks to the material used, CTP do not constrain any movement. Walking, running or jumping are a breeze, while, due to the special designed crotch area, movement in a kneeled or squatting position was not restrained in any manner.

These pants met the high expectations I had, not only to their make, but also their weight. The fabric is strong and extremely light, wrinkle resistant and resiliant. The Teflon fabric keeps stains and liquids away. My last con would be that they are quite baggy, but I’m wearing size 38, so that might be why.

The flat front design means they look super professional, and for an everyday pant these are hard to beat.
