European Maritime Safety Agency Awards Contracts
Both Schiebel and UMS Skeldar (a joint venture between Saab and UMS Aero Group), market leaders in Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Air Systems (UAS), were awarded contracts by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA).
Schiebel’s CAMCOPTER S-100 UAS was selected for the coveted maritime surveillance service provision contract, based on its service record in the maritime domain, as well as its proven maritime surveillance expertise. In fulfillment of this contract, the company will be able to provide simultaneous maritime surveillance services at several sites. The S-100 Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) will be equipped with an L3 Wescam MX-10 Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) camera gimbal and an Overwatch Imaging PT-8 OceanWatch payload, as well as an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver.
UMS Skeldar’s SKELDAR V-200 rotary UAV, powered by Hirth Engines, was selected to fulfil an EMSA framework contract valued at €14 million for 2-4 years for RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems) VTOL Services for Emissions Monitoring and Maritime Surveillance on an emergency basis. This announcement follows a range of task-specific demonstrations by the company, UAV specialist operator Nordic Unmanned and Norut Northern Research Institute, and the award of contracts to support enforcement of EU Directives and other important coastal and maritime tasks. Two SKELDAR V-200 systems will be provided to Nordic Unmanned, which will then provide UAV based services together with UMS SKELDAR and Norut via EMSA to users of the EU member states.
