SATB Series: Saab

Selected Industrial View with Åsa Thegström, Head of Saab Business Unit Training & Simulation within Business Area Dynamics

On the occasion of I/ITSEC 2017, MILITARY TECHNOLOGY publishes its Annual Simulation and Training Bosses (SATB) Series that conveys the thoughts and messages of the world’s defence simulation and training leaders, according to the question: “How do you apply/integrate live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) technologies to your tactical training, and can LVC training address the military’s readiness crisis??

Warfare is a complex duty with many assets involved. Our assignment is to keep combined arms training possible to perform in a way that makes high quality training available and cost-effective.

To be able to do so Saab puts all the requirements for needed capability in the centre and focus in how to deliver good and solid training value to our customers. Depending in the need and the identified gaps we combine different systems and products from Live, Virtual, Constructive and C2 into solutions while we continue to measure the performance of exercises and the customer’s capabilities.

That is why Saab Training & Simulation build systems modular and scalable around a powerful Exercise Control System. The last 10 years we have integrated virtual simulators, C2 and video into the Live Training domain. Today we use virtual mortar simulators, UAV’s, C2 systems ,and artillery as players in Live Tactical Training.

For this purpose, Saab have developed a tool (WISE Connectivity) that makes integration easier and several customers and developers use it. It is a software suite and a generic integration platform that allows connection of systems or applications into a common environment. This gives us a really good way of providing any LVC solution to the customer.

We are following the latest within Gaming Technology and uses different products in our customer’s solutions. Examples of this is integration of VBS and Steelbeast into Live Training and Unity3D as virtual environment in embedded operational systems. The latest project is integration of Microsoft Hololens, making it possible to interact with live players on an individual level. This technology is emerging fast and we can see many useful opportunities here.

Back to the question: The answer is yes, I am sure that LVC-integration can help the military to achieve readiness faster and most of all to a lower cost.

I/ITSEC is showcasing the future of innovation across defences and www.monch.com/mpg/news/iitsec17.html brings together key developments from the show.
