SATB Series: Cubic Global Defense

Selected Industrial View with David Buss (Vice Admiral US Navy Ret.), President of Cubic Global Defense

On the occasion of I/ITSEC 2017, MILITARY TECHNOLOGY publishes its Annual Simulation and Training Bosses (SATB) Series that conveys the thoughts and messages of the world’s defence simulation and training leaders, according to the question: “How do you apply/integrate live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) technologies to your tactical training, and can LVC training address the military’s readiness crisis??

As the US and our partner nations’ air and ground security forces move toward a more integrated environment, Cubic leverages our experience in multi-domains to enhance realism and improve the cost-effectiveness of training.

In ground training, the dynamic nature of both the operational environment and the future military is changing how troops prepare and sustain their readiness for missions in the multi-domain battlespace. Therefore, modern ground training systems must be able to meet both the kinetic and cognitive elements needed for inter-service, multi-domain operations to satisfy the training needs of the future force. Cubic is meeting this need by providing an expeditionary Integrated Training Environment, which takes our proven instrumented live training capabilities and combines them with state-of-the-art, realistic, tactical simulations.

Cubic is also incorporating LVC technologies to meet the air combat training requirements of fourth and fifth generation pilots. As most training air space and ranges are limited in physical size and geography, synthetic entities must be integrated to allow the training air space to “expand” – creating an environment that better replicates the high-threat scenarios pilots will face. To further drive technical solutions for air combat training, Cubic is under contract with the Air Force Research Lab’s (AFRL) to deliver a Secure LVC Advanced Training Environment (SLATE) Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD), a three-year project designed to produce specifications for an LVC Program of Record for fifth-generation platforms and capabilities like the F-35. As the lead system integrator, Cubic will shape the development and demonstration of a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7 LVC system for air combat training and will implement various live training integration efforts.

Performance-Based Training, supported by scalable training solutions and the ability to leverage predictive analytical tools to better help our customers measure the real training outcomes they seek, is truly the science behind the art of warfighting that will be the enabler to improve training readiness.

I/ITSEC is showcasing the future of innovation across defences and www.monch.com/mpg/news/iitsec17.html brings together key developments from the show.
