I/ITSEC 2018: SATB – CAE Defence & Security

Simulation and Training Bosses (SATB) Series Selected Industrial Views

On the occasion of I/ITSEC 2018, MILITARY TECHNOLOGY publishes its sixth Annual Simulation and Training Bosses (SATB) Series that conveys the thoughts and messages of the world’s defence simulation and training leaders, according to the question: “With the need for multi domain LVC training being paramount, what new innovations does your company provide?”

Defence forces have long used elements of live, virtual, and constructive as part of their overall training continuum. Live training will always have a central role for militaries in developing combat capability and readiness. In recent years, there has been an increasing use of virtual and constructive training as simulation-based technology has afforded the downloading of some training to the virtual environment, and the cost/benefit analysis has made the use of more virtual training very compelling. What is needed, however, and what is happening now is the move toward the integration of live-virtual-constructive training as opposed to treating each as individual and isolated training techniques.

There are numerous examples around the world of programs targeting the increased use of integrated LVC training, including the integration of virtual and constructive into live training to make that live training more realistic, efficient and impactful. Programs such as the Defence Operational Training Capability across the Air, Land, and Sea domains in the United Kingdom are aimed at establishing the architectural standards and technologies that will enable integrated LVC training.

CAE is a company focused on training so we are continually innovating to remain at the forefront of the training industry. This past summer we launched a five-year internal research and development initiative called Project Digital Intelligence that will see us invest more than C$1 billion to transform our products and services to leverage digital technologies. We will be creating solutions that involve big data, artificial intelligence, cloud-computing, cybersecurity and augmented/virtual reality, all of which can and will play a role in enabling integrated LVC training.

A specific example is a solution we will be launching at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) called CAE Rise, which stands for Real-time Insights and Standardized Evaluations. CAE Rise leverages the wealth of “big data” that is gathered during simulator training sessions, and is designed to provide the ability for instructors to deliver standardized training and objectively assess pilot competencies using live data. It was first introduced earlier this year to the civil aviation market and we have delivered CAE Rise to AirAsia and other airline customers to enhance and improve pilot training programs. We are now introducing this to the military market to help enhance the efficiency of pilot training, which is even more critical right now as militaries face the challenge of pilot recruitment, training and retention. We also plan to introduce CAE Rise to live training so that data gathered during live flight training sessions can be used to adapt and tailor the training being delivered.

Another recently launched CAE innovation is our CAE Medallion MR e-Series Visual System, a complete and turnkey visual solution designed specifically for military fighter and fast-jet training. Fighter and fast-jet training tasks such as formation and low-level flying, air-to-air refueling, and target identification are challenging and expensive to perform during live training. By creating a more realistic and immersive virtual training platform, fighter pilots can practice and rehearse more efficiently in a virtual environment so that when they do go the real aircraft that live training is more effective.
