Sat-Com HAMMER HEAD Radio Opens Up Marine Market

Based on Legacy Expertise in Multi-Band Solutions

Sat-Com Communications Systems, a radio communications specialist in Windhoek, Namibia, has developed a new radio – the HAMMER HEAD – which opens up potential exploitation of the marine market.

Based on its flagship LEOPARD software-defined radio (SDR), development of the new radio followed comments from an existing European customer that LEOPARD needed a new interface to be better able to exploit its usefulness to the marine market. Based on LEOPARD’s HF, VHF and UHF frequency-hopping communications, HAMMER HEAD offers users a larger display and keypad, with additional features designed to improve ergonomics, such as peripheral connectivity via front-mounted sockets and a three-way antenna switch. The new radio can be mounted in a standard 19in rack for use in base station or ground-to-air applications.

LEOPARD and CHEETAH (the manpack variant) combine capability in all three frequency bands (1.6-512MHz) in a single device, saving weight and volume for both mounted and dismounted applications. The company is also working on development projects that include an IP/network radio for mesh networks and a handheld radio for dismounted use.
