LAAD 2017: Latin America a Strategic Region for Saab

Saab displays broad portfolio of land, air and sea solutions

At LAAD 2017, Saab displays its broad portfolio of land, air and sea solutions, the full-size GRIPEN NG fighter replica and simulator, various systems for naval defence, such as the MCMV – mine countermeasures vessel – and the VISBY class corvette; for air defence, such as the RBS 70 NG; and for surveillance, such as the ERIEYE Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft.

With a long-term relationship with Latin America, Saab considers LAAD as an important opportunity to meet with potential partners and customers. Additionally, in a world with increasingly fast changing scenarios, LAAD is also a very important arena to highlight the future of the defence and security industry in the region.

Latin America is a strategic region for Saab. Apart from the important partnerships already established in the region, we are very interested in supporting local companies with the development of solutions that will meet customers’ needs and requests,” Bo Torrestedt, President of Saab in Latin America, points out. “LAAD is a great opportunity to present our complete offer and to discuss new ideas and applications for our systems and solutions.”

Some of Saab’s solutions already in use in Latin America include the short range air defence laser guided missile system RBS 70, which was part of the security arrangements for the 2016 Olympic Games, in Rio de Janeiro; training and simulation systems; the ERIEYE; the TactiCall system, which integrates different communication technologies; and the EOS 500 fire control director.

The Brazilian Air Force has procured 36 GRIPEN NG fighters, and Brazil’s national industry is already benefitting from the GRIPEN technology transfer programme that has been in place since October 2015. Up to the present time, around 150 engineers have participated or are participating in training programmes in Sweden. More than 30 have already returned to Brazil and, by 2024, there will be more than 350 Brazilians trained.

Saab will hold a press conference about the development of the GRIPEN NG programme at LAAD on 4 April (Tuesday) at 15:30h at the press room in Pavillion 2, mezzanine 2.

On 5 April, the company will hold two press conferences at its LAAD stand (O20): the first one about Saab’s missile system solutions (at 11:00h); and the second one about Saab’s naval solutions (at 13:00h)

Furthermore, Saab showcases (on Stand O20 [internal area] and Space J.OUT.70 [external area]): The naval version of the GRIPEN, GRIPEN Maritime; MCMV mine countermeasures vessel; naval radar systems; surface-based radar family Weapon control systems; the Double Eagle remotely operated underwater vehicle; 9LV Combat Management System RBS15 anti-ship missile system; multi-spectral camouflage systems, such as Special Operations Tactical Suit (SOTACS) and ULCAS (Ultra-Lightweight Camouflage Screen); the Carl-Gustaf M3 and M4 multipurpose weapon system and the AT4 disposable weapon system; and training and simulation solutions.
