Royal Danish Army Orders Camouflage from Saab
Saab recently received several orders from Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO) for Static Camouflage Systems with deliveries to be expected this year.
The Royal Danish Army is a user of Saab Barracuda’s signature management systems, and has been for more than 25 years. These new orders contain static camouflage systems, which is an advanced multispectral camouflage net that provides signature protection for vehicles and other objects in static positions.
“With these products, the Royal Danish Army will have the most advanced multi-spectral camouflage systems on the market, providing them with exceptional levels of multi-spectral protection against multiple sensor threats,” Görgen Johansson, Head of Saab business area Dynamics, said.
These special camouflage systems are designed to significantly reduce the ultra-violet, visual, near-infrared, short wave infrared to thermal sensor and broadband radar wavelength signature of vehicles. In part this is achieved using Saab’s Heat Transfer Reduction technologies, which are designed to make the internal environment of the vehicle more liveable in extreme conditions.
Traditional camouflage systems may conceal a vehicle from the human eye but leave them easy to spot elsewhere on the electromagnetic spectrum, particularly when the enemy is using radar and thermal imaging. In addition to making vehicles harder for a human to see, Saab’s advanced multi-spectral camouflage systems distort the vehicle’s shape, making it difficult to identify with radar, also reducing a vehicle’s heat signature, making it more difficult to detect with thermal infrared sensors both day and night. This is arguably the more important feature, as modern armoured vehicle crews often overwatch the battlefield with thermal imagers even in daytime.
