Saab Wins CARL-GUSTAF Contract from US Army

Seven-Year $87 Million Contract, Deliveries from 2021

Saab has won a multi-year framework contract for the latest version of the CARL-GUSTAF infantry weapon system from the US Army, which has designated it the M3E1.

Following on from the framework agreement signed last year for CARL-GUSTAF ammunition, the new IDIQ contract has a value of $87 million (€74.3 million) and a duration of seven years, with an initial call-off valued at $9.2 million for delivery in 2021. The weapons will be operated by the US Army, Marine Corps and US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM).

The Saab M3E1 is optimised to meet the needs of today’s warfighters. This lightweight and effective recoilless rifle ensures readiness on the modern battlefield with multi-role capabilities through a wide array of munitions including counter-defilade, anti-structure, and anti-armour,” commented Erik Smith, President and CEO of Saab in the US.

The CARL-GUSTAF system has been a programme of record in the US since 2013. In 2018, the U.S. Army announced it would acquire the latest version of the system. At 14.8lbs, the new version is 28% percent lighter than its predecessor, the M3.
