Combat System for POHJANMAA-class Corvettes at Stake
The Finnish Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 9 April that Saab has been shortlisted as the combat system provider and integrator for the Finnish Navy’s four new POHJANMAA-class corvettes within the Squadron 2020 programme. No contract has yet been awarded and in March the MoD announced the procurement would be delayed due to the resignation of the nation’s Cabinet.
“The announcement by the Finnish Defence Minister confirms our position as a world-class combat system provider and we look forward to continuing our long-standing relationship with Finland,” commented Senior Vice President and head of Saab’s surveillance business area, Anders Carp.
All current Finnish Navy vessels feature at least one system from Saab, with the majority operating several systems from the company. In January 2018, Saab was selected to deliver several systems, including the 9LV combat management system and new lightweight torpedoes, for the mid-life upgrade programme being conducted for the Finnish Navy’s HAMINA-class missile boats.
