Saab and Conlog Partner to Give GIRAFFE Longer Neck

Mobile High-Mast System Aids Deployed Operations

Saab has partnered with Finnish firm Conlog Oy to produce a new mobile mast system for the former’s GIRAFFE 4A long-range active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar.

The new system will help the sensor avoid high obstacles – such as trees or buildings – that block its field of regard, so aiding users in building a detailed radar picture during deployed operations. “The unique combination of the system ́s mobility, and the high mast, gives the operators supreme capability and creates time to act,” said Markus Borgljung, VP and Head of Radar Solutions.

Conlog has previously developed a mast shelter vehicle, which incorporates a 26m system into a ground vehicle that provides an office-type workspace, for up to five people, inside a hull which has high levels of blast protection as well as protection against electromagnetic pulse and NBC attack. In 2020, Conlog acquired SK-Lift Oy, a hydraulic mast systems developer. At the time, Conlog said the SK-Lift masts were “globally in a league of their own,” and the acquisition would enable the firm to explore “opportunities well beyond Finnish borders.”

The GIRAFFE 4A offers the capability to detect and track everything from small UAS to fighter jets and hypersonic missiles, Saab says. The company also claims it is effective against targets that use radar-absorbent materials, and is capable of detecting and tracking jammer strobes.
