Russia Introduces Communications Simulator into Strategic Missile Forces

Enables Real-Time Escalation Management in Addition to Training Benefit

The Russian Strategic Missile Forces (also referred to as the Strategic Rocket Forces) have introduced a communications simulator to the regional training centre in Pereslavl-Zalessky, according to a 5 September announcement from the MoD.

The simulator enables trainees to practice establishing communications with “various levels of command” in any condition, the MoD states. The system also enables control of the trainees in real time, and can simulate various training scenarios.

Establishing secure strategic communications is a priority for the Russian armed forces, as it enables the real-time management of escalation. In the event of a conflict with a considerable threat, the Strategic Missile Forces would be responsible for signaling Russia’s intent to inflict unacceptable damage on an opponent’s military and critical infrastructure. And, if deterrence proved unsuccessful, they would also be required to inflict that harm.

Controlling these forces through timely communication is, therefore, critical for the Russian concept of escalation management, and improving the communication system through simulations is one way in which this can be practiced more frequently.
