Annual SHOT Show Rugged Tactical Tools for Extreme Conditions: Streamlight

RTTEC Selected Industrial Views

On the occasion of SHOT Show 2019, MILITARY TECHNOLOGY published the third Annual Rugged Tactical Tools for Extreme Conditions (RTTEC) Series that conveys the thoughts and messages of the world’s tactical equipment leaders, according to the question: “How is your company (through your products/solutions) able to protect/help the Special Forces/Law Enforcement Operator?” For printed version, please pick up a magazine  at the show. Here is Streamlight‘s response:

Streamlight manufactures a wide variety of products designed to assist law enforcement, tactical and military Special Forces operators in the performance of their duties. In general, Streamlight designs its products to do more, run longer, be smaller and lighter, and remain intuitive and easy to activate under the harshest conditions.

Regular police typically carry one of Streamlight’s compact, all-purpose, rechargeable duty lights which offer multiple settings, extreme brightness (500+ lumens), sufficient distance throw (200-400+ meters), as well as at least one hour of run time on high and 8+ hours on low. These lights cast a bright white beam that illuminates an entire area so you see what is in front of you as well as along peripheries. Many officers also carry one of Streamlight’s ultra-compact EDC lights for license checks, doing paperwork, or performing other tasks under low-light conditions.

For police SWAT operators, Streamlight high lumen lights such as the TLR-1 HL weapons-mounted light are ideal. Whether used for illuminating a dark alley, vehicle, or outdoor path, they flood an area with 800 lumens of light and deliver a wide peripheral beam that lets operators see all around them, including what might be lurking in dark corners. For search and rescue operations, SWAT personnel look for lights that also feature increased candela (30,000+) and distance throw (400+ meters) to provide superior long-range lighting downrange.

For military Special Forces, Streamlight’s high performance lights, lanterns, weapon light/laser sighting devices and scene lighting solutions are engineered and manufactured in such a way so that the same piece of gear can be used for everything from pinpointing a target, to room clearing, to conducting search and rescue missions. For example, by consolidating features into a single platform, Streamlight is able to deliver products like the Sidewinder, which enables operators to carry less gear and fewer batteries.

Following are some of the newest trends in flashlight technology for law enforcement and Special Forces personnel to consider:

  • USB-rechargeable products that let you charge on-the-go from most any USB power source, avoiding the worry of not having batteries on hand when needed most. First responders can simply connect to a USB port or an AC wall adaptor, or use a USB charger that plugs into a patrol vehicle’s on-board USB port.
  • The Streamlight 18650 USB lithium ion battery with an integrated micro USB charging port. This battery reinvents rechargeability by letting users charge the battery outside of the flashlight, eliminating the need for a separate charger base.
  • Flashlights that accept “dual fuel” or multiple source battery back-ups are also a growing trend, offering the convenience of using either lithium or alkaline batteries, depending on availability or user preference.

Leading manufacturers like Streamlight continually enhance existing and introduce new products, so law enforcement, tactical and other personnel should upgrade their flashlight products every 2-3 years to take advantage of these improvements. Doing so can make a real difference in terms of efficiency, productivity and safety on the job.
