RTSYS to Supply SEMA ASW Training Targets to Dutch Navy

Seven Targets for Joint Dutch/Belgian Training

RTSYS is to supply seven SEMA portable, recoverable ASW training targets to the Royal Netherlands Navy, the company announced on 24 February.

The multi-million Euro contract was awarded on the basis that SEMA was the easiest autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to operate and offered the widest range of acoustic training capabilities, the company stated. The acoustic facilities include: acoustic echo-repeater (1-33kHz); five bands for active sonar frequency; two bands for active homing torpedo; six narrowband (200Hz-38kHz); two broadband (450Hz-8kHz and 10-23kHz); and an acoustic recorder with data encryption. These features will allow Dutch (and Belgian) forces to train localisation and tracking of a submarine in realistic conditions.

SEMA is an autonomous, recoverable, acoustic target dedicated to ASW training and torpedo-firing exercise. It can be operated from a variety of platforms, including surface ships, submarines, and aircraft. Easy to deploy (even from an RHIB), the navigation route is plotted with either waypoints or segments. Different training modes, such as passive, active and combined acoustics can be programmed. The system is easy to operate and recover and is reconfigurable within one hour, with a spare battery.
