Elbit Systems $27 Million Contract for First Phase
Elbit Systems has been awarded a contract valued at approx $27 million (€22.2 million) for the first phase of an upgrade programme for the IAR-99 SOIM trainers operated by the Romanian Air Force, the company announced on 14 December.
The contract, awarded by Avioane Craiova SA, has a performance period of four years and includes an integrated logistic support element. Elbit Systems will equip the aircraft with advanced avionics systems and a live training embedded virtual avionics system, which will provide close air support and air-to-air training capabilities. This technology upgrade will help facilitate effective pilot transition to the operation of advanced fighter aircraft, such as the F-16.
“This upgrade programme follows a range of technologies delivered by Elbit Systems to the [Romanian Air Force] in collaboration with Romanian companies, including large-scale upgrades for various fixed-wing aircraft, as well as the supply of advanced capabilities for rotary-wing aircraft,” commented General Manager of Elbit Systems Aerospace, Yoram Shmuely.
