Rohde & Schwarz Supports Romanian Navy’s Missions

Germany’s Rohde & Schwarz provided the Romanian Navy (Forțele Navale Române) with a communications suite for fitment on board the 1980-era Cosar class minelayer Vice-Amiral Constantin Bălescu (F 274), consisting of modern R&S M3SR software defined radios (R&S Series4100 HF and R&S Series4400 VHF/UHF) plus a message handling system. The advanced communications systems enable communication within a task group and with the Allied Maritime Command, according to Hansjörg Herrbold, Vice President Market Segment Navy at Rohde & Schwarz, underlining the inherent significance of ultra-modern, shipboard communications equipment in an era of networked and digitized operations both in littoral waters and in open seas. The Romanian Navy in particular awaits further modernization, with state-of-the-art hardware and software components filling major capability gaps that were identified on board several surface ship classes, most of which representing indigenously built platforms and secondhand-assets of Soviet/Russian origin. The geopolitical aspects of the Black Sea region call for the Romanian fleet to adapt their future missions to adequately respond to both symmetric and asymmetric challenges. The fitment of advanced communications equipment as provided by Rohde & Schwarz forms part of this tendency, with medium- and long-term acquisition plans enabling the fleet to accomplish the military tasks and objectives Romania committed to within NATO. This scheme involves activities like High Readiness Patrol in the Black Sea, with the Romanian Navy providing the flag ship for Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2 (SNMCMG2).

As to the modernization of the single Cosar class minelayer, Hansjörg Herrbold, Vice President Market Segment Navy Rohde & Schwarz, noted, “We are very proud to have our equipment integrated into this major naval asset for Romania. The customer is very satisfied with the [radio frequency] performance and reliability of our systems.” He added, “In less than four months, we provided the Romanian Navy with a tailored system.”

Rohde & Schwarz has provided more than 40 naval fleets with state-of-the-art communications technology. Earlier this year, production in the company’s Memmingen manufacturing plant achieved a major milestone: the delivery more than 10,000 R&S M3SR radios.
