Rheinmetall to Modify Additional 27 Command BOXERs for Bundeswehr

Delivery in A2 Configuration by 2024

Rheinmetall is to modernise a further 27 BOXER command vehicles to the A2 standard under a Bundeswehr contract awarded last month, the company announced on 11 February.

Work will commence in March and the vehicles will be returned to Bundeswehr service in 2022-2024. The command variant of BOXER (FüFz in German) serves as a mobile tactical operations centre of command post in mechanised formations. Featuring a full range of radio equipment and advanced C4I systems, the forthcoming upgrade encompasses an extensive array of modernisation measures, including: driver’s visualisation system; exhaust emission and air-conditioning ducts; towing gear; driver’s station; headlight technology; and software and system security modifications. In addition, the vehicle’s satellite communications capability, voice and data transmission and IT equipment will all be improved.

The latest order follows the modernisation to A2 status of a first lot of 38 BOXER command vehicles that commenced in 2017. The upgrade of the second lot will ensure that the Bundeswehr’s entire fleet of 65 BOXER command vehicles reflects the latest tactical and technical capabilities.
