Rheinmetall’s Stunning SPECTAC

Innovative Stun Grenade for Military and Law Enforcement Operators

Rheinmetall has unveiled what it terms an “innovative non-lethal effector” – the rectangular SPECTAC stun grenade, specifically designed for military and law enforcement operators. Its most striking feature, the company suggests, is its ‘smartphone-like’ design.

SPECTAC’s novel design offers a number of advantages. With dimensions of 110x63x20mm and a weight of just 350g, this highly ergonomic one-bang stun grenade slips easily into personal equipment, making it very convenient to carry – even in covert or VIP protection operations, for example. Moreover, its rectangular shape offers other tactical benefits: it does not roll away in an uncontrolled manner after landing, but instead comes quickly to a halt, making it ideal for use on stairways. Maximum movement radius is just 35 cm at most, meaning the desired effect reliably takes place in the intended target zone.

Waterproof at depths of up to 20m, SPECTAC produces a blinding flash and deafening bang. It is currently available with acoustic pressure levels of 170 and 180 decibels and two delay times, 0.5 and 1.5 seconds. In order to make it even safer to handle, Rheinmetall engineers opted for a tried-and-tested bottom top venting (BTV) design: in the event of an inadvertent detonation, the explosive effect blows out of the top and the bottom of the grenade, reliably protecting the user’s throwing hand. SPECTAC produces no dangerous fragments and each grenade is X-rayed prior to shipment, assuring maximum functional reliability and safety (with X-ray images stored for ten years). Neither percussion cap nor ignition delay mechanism contain lead compounds. In addition, the grenades are compliant with REACH, the European Chemicals Directive.

Successfully qualified at the end of 2020, SPECTAC is immediately available. (Photo: Rheinmetall)
