AR Solutions has Potential for Additional Platforms
Last December, Rheinmetall won a Bundeswehr tender for advanced training rigs and augmented reality (AR) systems to train maintenance personnel for the A400M, the company announced on 4 May.
Several high fidelity training rigs, incorporating AR capabilities and specifically developed for the German Air Force, will be installed at the service’s Technical Training Centre at Wunstorf Air Base. The combination of the training rig with supplementary AR – a concept developed by Rheinmetall Electronics – enables a comprehensive, integrated approach to training, though the rigs can also be used without the AR engaged.
Detailed and faithful replicas of various parts of the A400M, the rigs enable personnel to be trained and rehearsed in pre- and post-operational activities, as well as the actual mechanical procedures. Use of the AR system also enables training activities that cannot be practiced on the rigs. This training concept points to a different way forward for training maintenance personnel – for the Bundeswehr as well as other A400M operators – and can potentially be adapted to other platforms.
