Rafael’s New Improved Typhoon Mk-30

MONS talks to Rafael about the improvements they made to the Typhoon Mk-30

At Pacific 2017, Rafael launched its new modified version of the Typhoon Mk-30 remote weapon station. Doron Levi, Marketing and Business Development Director for Naval Warfare Systems at Rafael, told MONS: “Although the Typhoon already exists in many different versions, we wanted to take the opportunity of Pacific 2017 to launch the Typhoon Mk-30 with the few extra features we have added to it.”

First amongst these is an on-mount Electro-Optical (EO) Director including a Fire Control Systemto to optimise effective surveillance and engage threats in all weather conditions, day and night. “These gives any ship fitted with the Typhoon Mk-30 the ability to deal with swarm attacks from fast and small boats firing anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) or suicide boats,” continues Mr. Levi.

The second key improvement is the increased elevation of the gun to 70°. “Combined with applied ballistic munitions (ABM) and the EO device, which has a laser range finder that detects targets and gives their range thus facilitating prioritisation, the Typhoon can now defeat small and medium unmanned aerial systems,” says Mr. Levi.

The Typhoon Mk-30c fires all NATO standard 30×173 ammunition with adjustable rates of fire, from single shot, up to 200 rounds per minute. Its magazine holds 200 ready rounds on mount and has dual feed.

“The first customer for this new version is the Peruvian Navy, who selected it for its ‘Rio Pativilca’ class Offshore Patrol Vessels’,” concludes Mr Levi. “We expect the Israeli Navy will also select this system, although it has not yet been decided, and we are in talks with the US Navy, which is one of our biggest customers for other Typhoon weapon systems.”
