Rafael at AUSA 2020

Programmes, Products and Partnerships

Delivering the first IRON DOME battery to the US Army and preparing to complete deliveries of TROPHY for the ABRAMS fleet, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems is participating in the AUSA 2020 virtual event, 13-16 October. A brand new ‘Talking Defence’ magazine will provide online attendees with the most-up-to-date information on the company’s wide variety of solutions.

At the heart of Rafael’s systems are advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning capabilities that optimise performance. These also characterise two of Rafael’s leading next-generation technologies, integrated into its Suite for Future Armoured Vehicles: a transparent cockpit and a quantum leap in AI capabilities, combining advanced subsystems and optionally-manned technologies, transforming any armoured vehicle into an ultra-modern combat system. FIRE WEAVER is another breakthrough system – a revolutionary networked attack system for land-based operations digitisation.

In today’s rapidly-changing battlefield, the combat helicopter still holds a central and important role as a valuable asset for commanders in both defence and offence. Rafael offers a full armament upgrade package, including both 4th-and 5th-generation stand-off precision-guided electro-optical (EO) SPIKE missiles, with a range of 32km, EO devices, guided/unguided rocket interface, C2 interfaces for pilot situation awareness, Helmet-Mounted Displays (HMD) for cueing SPIKE and EOS to pilot head orientation, and even heliborne broadband digital datalinks for continuous communication.

The game-changing technological advantage on the battlefield will be the capability to turn separate systems into a single, fully integrated system, with all components operating simultaneously and in concert ‒ ensuring continuous battlefield superiority and combat overmatch. Rafael will demonstrate this in its integrated SAMSON 30mm RWS. Designed to mount a 30/40mm gun and a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun, SAMSON can be integrated into any modern fighting vehicle ‒ new, existing, or upgraded, offering a comprehensive suite that includes SPIKE LR2, a 5th-generation precision, long-range, EO-guided, multi-purpose, multi-platform missile ; the TROPHY active protection system with combat-proven protection against anti-armour threats; FIRE WEAVER, an ultra-smart tactical, networked combat system with sophisticated autonomous capabilities that connects all types of sensors and shooters over any tactical radio in real time, instantly performing targeting and optimal shooter selection for unlimited targets and closing sensor-to-shooter loops with precision strikes; BNET, a next-generation ultra-high-speed broadband tactical software-defined on-the-move radio; and FIREFLY, a mini, portable, BLOS close-combat loitering munitions that meets the challenges faced by ground forces in urban combat.

In September, Rafael began delivery of the first IRON DOME battery of two ordered by the US in August last year. The initial delivery is being made in record time and will be followed shortly by the second. In August, the company and partner Raytheon announced a joint venture for an IRON DOME production facility in the US – the first such all-up-round facility outside Israel.

Over the years, Rafael has signed numerous agreements with American companies for joint development, production and marketing of air, land and marine systems. In fact, most of the systems listed above came to the US military via partnership with major US primes, including Boeing, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Leonardo DRS. Rafael plans to enhance its presence in the US by increasing the capability of existing subsidiaries (C4ATS, RSGS) and creating fully-owned American companies.
