Single-Hand Operation, Increased Sensitivity and Superior Accuracy
On 23 October 2017, FLIR Systems announced the FLIR identiFINDER R440, the latest addition to its identiFINDER R-Series handheld radiation detection product line. According to the company, the FLIR identiFINDER R440 provides users one hand operability, rapid detection, and highly accurate identification during survey missions and secondary screening operations.
Weighing less than 1.5kg (3.2lbs) at 4×10.6×3.7in (10.2×26.9×9.4cm), the FLIR identiFINDER R440 is one of the industry’s smallest and lightest radioisotope identification devices (RIID) with a 2x2in sodium iodide (NaI) detector. “With 3.5 times more sensitivity than similarly-sized RIIDs, responders can detect radiation from farther distances and behind heavier shielding,” the company says. “Delivering 10% better resolution than other products in the category, the FLIR identiFINDER R440 provides greater accuracy with fewer false alarms.”
Due to its extended energy range (10keV to 10MeV), the identiFINDER R440 detects gamma radiation (Gamma Sensitivity {Cs-137, NaI}: 1,850cps/μSv/h; Gamma Spectrum Length: 1,024 channels) and can indicate the presence of neutrons found in special nuclear materials.
With over 20,000 FLIR identiFINDER series products deployed globally, the familiar user interface and easy-to-read data of the FLIR identiFINDER R440 allows for quick integration with existing operational protocols to reduce training time and costs. Training on the device required less than 10 minutes for operators and one day for advanced users.
“The new level of sensitivity and resolution of the FLIR identiFINDER R440 provides the ability to perform quick situational assessment during radiological emergencies,” Jim Cannon, President and CEO of FLIR Systems, said. “Its compact size enables responders to use it with one hand, making the FLIR identiFINDER R440 a practical product for their mission.”
Operating temperature (ambient): -4-122°F (-20-50°C); operating humidity: 10-80percent. It features sourceless gain stabilisation (patents pending) and real-time linearisation of gamma energy with 32GB internal memory data storage.
FLIR will unveil the FLIR identiFINDER R440 at the Chemical, Biological, Radiation, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNE) Convergence tradeshow 6-8 November in Indianapolis, IN/USA, booth #213. For the European market, FLIR Systems will unveil the FLIR identiFINDER R440 iat Milipol Paris (21-24 November), France, booth #H-146. The FLIR identiFINDER R440 will be available globally in the first quarter of 2018.
