Streamlight ProTac HL-X Flashlight

MONS Gear Box Product Review

An intuitive and reliable illumination platform, Streamlight offers the ProTac HL-X as a high-performance tactical light, featuring an aircraft-aluminium body with a hard-anodised finish, a tempered-glass lens, and O-ring seals.

Over the past two years MONS Gear Box has reviewed a lot of Streamlight’s innovative solutions and have so far been overwhelmed with the quality in design. The company’s quality and value are almost unmatched in a very crowded industry. The Streamlight HL-X flashlight is purpose built to take a beating and perform without fail. Like all of its ProTac siblings before it, the HL-X is machined from high-grade aluminium with a clean anodised finish. The lens is impact-resistant tempered glass that resists scratching and protects the 1,000 lumens; 27,100 candela (high beam) diode behind it (strobe setting included). We tried to break it by throwing the light from second story windows to concrete, running it over with our cars and throwing it out of the car at high speeds…the light has also been rated impact-resistant for drops up to 2m, we dropped it from a little higher…and it still works fine.

The total dimensions of the light are: 5.4in (13.8 cm) long, with a head diameter of 1.06in, and a body diameter of 0.94 inches. The total weight, with two CR123 batteries, is 5.7oz (162g) with CR123 batteries; 6.2oz (176g) with Streamlight’s rechargeable 18650 rechargeable battery. An optional lithium-ion rechargeable battery pushes the weight to 4.4 ounces. The light operates with C4 LED technology, which features a 50,000-hour lifetime and is impervious to shock, according to the company.

The ProTac HL-X features TEN-TAP programming, meaning one can choose from three user selectable programmes: 1- high/strobe/low; 2- high only; -low/medium/high. C4 LED illumination output and run times are:

  • High for maximum illumination: 1,000 lumens; 27,100 candela; 330m beam; runs 1.25 hours (CR123A batteries); runs 1.5 hours (18650 battery)
  • Medium for bright light and longer run time: 400 lumens; 10,000 candela; 200m beam; runs 3 hours (CR123A batteries); runs 3.5 hours (18650 battery)
  • Low for extended run time: 65 lumens; 1,600 candela; 80m beam; runs 20 hours (CR123A batteries); runs 23 hours (18650 battery)
  • Strobe for signaling or disorienting: runs 2.5 hours (CR123A batteries); runs 3.25 hours (18650 battery)

The Protac HL-X is dual fuel and can run on two CR123A lithium cells or a Streamlight rechargeable 18650 battery. Streamlight offers it as a railmount, where, when using it, it is like having a headlight on your rifle. Streamlight also states the light is IPX7 waterproof to 1m for 30 minutes, which we tested and we are still using the light. A solid light that will shine our way for the dark months to come.

The Streamlight ProTac 2L-X flashlight features a crenelated bezel for use as a window breaker.
