Streamlight ProTac HL USB Headlamp

MONS Gear Box Product Review

Streamlight Inc.’s high-powered ProTac HL USB Headlamp provides up to 1,000 lumens (lm) and 20 hours of run time, while letting users charge it on the go from most USB power sources. The USB port, protected by a rubber boot to eliminate dust and debris, offers convenient recharging, but also accepts multiple source batteries, so that users will always have power when they need it. It comes with a rechargeable lithium ion battery, accepts a Streamlight 18650 lithium ion battery or two CR123A lithium batteries.

The headlamp delivers very bright light in a wide, sweeping beam, making it ideal for illuminating an entire area, including what may be hidden along perimeters and in corners. The light also comes equipped with a flood lens which diffuses the beam for close-up work. Offering three lighting modes, the ProTac HL USB white LED’s high setting provides a super-bright beam, delivering 1,000lm and 13,000 candela over a distance of 228m, with a run time of two hours. The light’s medium setting offers bright light (400lm and 6,000 candela, 60m distance) and a longer run time of 2.75 hours. The low setting offers a less intense beam (60lm, 900 candela, 65m distance) and an extended run time of up to 20 hours. The low setting is excellent for reading maps in the field and not getting your vision completely impaired.

The torch’s TEN-TAP programming switch allows for user selection from among three programmes: high/medium/low (factory default); high only; or low/medium/high.

The headlamp’s flood lens is tethered to the light and can be stored on the end cap when not in use. The light also comes equipped with interchangeable red and green lens filters which can be inserted into the flood lens, great for getting that night vision going.

The headlamp weighs 8.1oz with included battery and strap, and its face cap measures 1.2in in diameter and 4.0in wide. The light features durable polymer construction, and is IPX4 rated for water-resistance, and impact-resistance tested to one meter. Its 90 degree tilting head is designed to reduce neck fatigue. The adjustable elastic head strap fits comfortably over the head, and the rubber hard hat strap stays firmly in place.
