PROFILE: SCHOTTEL Propulsion Systems for Navies Worldwide

Contributed Content, Edited for Clarity and Length

Navies worldwide have long placed their trust in SCHOTTEL’s propulsion know-how. In order to offer customers state-of-the-art design, robustness, reliability and efficiency, the company, headquartered in Spay, Germany, is continuously optimising its high-quality propulsion systems. The wide portfolio, which comprises main and auxiliary units as well as automation systems and marine services, provides tailor-made solutions for every operational profile. Beyond this, as an OEM, the company guarantees availability of spare parts for decades to come. Examples of the most popular applications include:

Main propulsion units

SCHOTTEL Controllable Pitch Propeller (SCP)

Propeller blade pitch can be adjusted for manoeuvring and to accommodate changing operational conditions, providing benefits in high efficiency and low noise generation. The SCP’s robust design keeps maintenance requirements to a minimum and ensures a long service lifetime.

With a new generation of the CP hub, SCHOTTEL has further optimised the concept of the 5-bladed controllable pitch propeller. The propellers are optimally suited for higher speeds and thus for use in naval vessels, which require high power density, low pressure pulses and minimised noise generation. The new hub shape greatly reduces the risk of cavitation, which might occur in demanding, high-load applications. Furthermore, it features a full-feathering mode, in which the blades are set parallel to the flow to minimise drag resistance. This leads to further propulsion efficiency and reduced fuel consumption, as well as lower maintenance costs. Due to advanced mechanical design and hydrodynamic techniques, it offers a significant increase in efficiency and a blade foot with decreased exposure to cavitation.

The 5-bladed propeller covers a power range up to 30,000 kW and has a propeller diameter of up to 8.0 m: the first controllable-pitch propellers with the new hub have already entered naval service.

SCHOTTEL Rudder EcoPeller (SRE)

The device proves its worth across a wide range of applications with its unique combination of powerful propeller thrust and fin. With its special, hydrodynamically-optimised design, the SRE generates maximum steering forces, thereby enabling superior performance in terms of overall efficiency and course stability. This in turn reduces fuel consumption and ensures lower operating costs and emissions. Maximum mechanical capability is also assured, as the SRE is systematically designed as an L-drive, meaning it does not have an upper gearbox inside the vessel, which would reduce efficiency.

The focus of military applications is on the low vibration level (L-variant) and the hydrodynamic optimisation of the propulsion system, which minimises the underwater acoustic signature. The EcoPeller, ranging from 500-5,000 kW, is also suitable for sudden manoeuvres at high speeds.

Auxiliary propulsion unit

SCHOTTEL Rim Thruster (SRT)

In the SRT, the stator of the electric motor is installed in the outer part of the tunnel, while the propeller blades are attached to the inside of the rotor. This results in a space-saving and low-weight thruster, converting electrical energy directly into propulsion. Surrounding water permanently cools the electric motor, preventing it from overheating.

Its extremely compact design allows flexible installation – offering ship designers more freedom and leaving more space for other equipment. The rim thruster is characterised by low noise and vibration levels, resulting from the high blade number and absence of blade tip gap, which reduce pressure pulses. To further enhance comfort, it is optionally available with an elastic mounting. The SRT, covering power ranges from 200-800 kW, has outstandingly low maintenance requirements and a long service lifetime.

About SCHOTTEL
