PERAD Enhancements in the Offing

WB Group Details Modernisation Path for PERAD Tactical Radio

Speaking during this week’s Association of the United States Army exhibition in Washington DC, officials from WB Group briefed MONS on planned improvements to the company’s PERAD handheld tactical radio.

The company stated that it now has three new waveforms available for porting into the PERAD transceiver. These include a one megabit-per-second waveform which has a line-of-sight range of four kilometres (2.5 miles), although this reduces to one kilometre (0.6 miles) in built-up areas. The company is also offering a four megabit-per-second waveform with similar ranges, while a waveform providing a data rate of 60 kilobits-per-second which has a range in excess of four kilometres is also available. The company added that the PERAD radio will be delivered to the Wojska Lądowe (Polish Army) as part of the force’s TYTAN infantry soldier modernisation programme from 2019. While the company would not divulge the radio’s operating frequencies, it is almost certainly a Very High Frequency/Ultra High Frequency (30 megahertz to three gigahertz) transceiver. The firm continued that the radio can host twelve channels, each of which can accommodate up to 24 participants.
