NSM to Enter RAN Service from 2024

Now Embedded in 11 Nations

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA) has signed a contract with Australia to provide its Naval Strike Missile (NSM) and supporting equipment for the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) Anzac-class frigates and Hobart-class destroyers.

The Norwegian designed missile will enter RAN service from 2024, replacing the Harpoon anti-ship capacity under Project Sea 1300. “This is a significant milestone in the pathway to delivering a modern, effective, and survivable precision strike missile capability to the Royal Australian Navy. Executing this contract will be achieved through close collaboration between Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, Australian industry and the Commonwealth,” commented Eirik Lie, President of KDA.

Australia is a key customer and Kongsberg is committed to developing sovereign domestic capabilities in support of its systems through knowledge transfer and Australian manufacturing opportunities. The contract will see significant Australian content, delivered through Kongsberg Defence Australia and its growing network of Australian suppliers.

Developed in Norway, the NSM is a fifth-generation, highly capable, long-range, precision strike weapon, designed to defeat heavily protected maritime targets in contested environments, with a secondary role in land attack. It is in service under selection in 11 countries, including Canada, Germany, Norway, the UK and the US.

With a primary anti-ship role, NSM also has significant land attack capability. (KDA)
