Agreement Could be of Significant Benefit to Kongsberg
In a press conference on 13 February, Norwegian authorities announced the expansion of the strategic partnership with Germany for the acquisition of conventional submarines. The agreement will now include the Kongsberg NAVAL STRIKE MISSILE (NSM), to include further development of the existing missile system as well as German Navy acquisition in “significant numbers.”
This could have significant beneficial impact on Kongsberg and the network of approx.100 Norwegian suppliers of all sizes it is deploying in support of the submarine programme. Among other major components, Norwegian industry will deliver the submarines’ combat management system.
NSM is, “the world’s only fifth-generation long-range precision missile,” based on passive sensor technology and low radar signature, according to Kongsberg. It is currently in operation with the Norwegian and Polish navies and was recently selected by Malaysia.
